Let's Get to Know Thyme
Typically native to the Mediterranean climate and growing in warm climates, Thymus vulgaris is an evergreen shrub with grey-green leaves and light pink flowers when in bloom. This aromatic herb has traditionally been valued for its therapeutic benefits and culinary qualities.
Thyme, a perennial wild shrub from the Lamiaceae family native to the Mediterranean region, is considered an important wild edible plant that has been studied for centuries due to its unique importance in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries.
Due to its bioactive properties such as antimicrobial and antioxidant effects, it has significant economic importance because of its use in food, pharmaceuticals, and various industrial applications.
The name thyme is derived from a Greek word meaning "to smoke" or from thumus, meaning courage. The plant was considered a great source of invigoration and courage in the Middle Ages. It was a symbol of activity, bravery, and energy, and during the chivalric era, women embroidered a bee flying over a sprig of thyme onto the scarves they presented to their knights.
The ancient Greeks used it in their baths and burned it as incense in their temples, believing it to be a source of courage.
The spread of thyme to Europe is thought to have been thanks to the Romans, who used it to purify their rooms and to "give an aromatic flavor to cheeses and liqueurs." In medieval Europe, this plant was placed under pillows to aid sleep and prevent nightmares. During this period, women would give gifts that included thyme leaves, which were believed to bring courage to the wearer.
Odo of Meung, who lived in northern France, wrote in the 11th century under the name Aemilius Macer:
"The smoke of thyme drives away all snakes and other animals that spew venom from their mouths. Therefore, it is a custom for harvesters to mix thyme into their food; so that when these venomous animals fall asleep from exhaustion, they flee from them and do not harm them."
Christian mythology states that thyme was found in the manger of the baby Jesus' bed, and therefore it has had a wonderful fragrance ever since.
